☆ Photographer Platon sits presidents and protesters on the same wooden box

“More world leaders have sat on that box than any chair in history,” the photographer Platon, owner of that very box, told CNN in an interview conducted over Zoom. One of the girls that Platon photographed there was Esther Faraja. Vladimir Putin, photographed by Platon for Time’s Person of the Year in 2007, initially liked the image that Platon produced. Platon photographed Burmese politician and activist Aung San Suu Kyi in 2010, shortly after she was released from nearly 15 years of house arrest. Platon photographed members of the Burmese LGBTQ+ community who are living in exile and fighting against legislation that criminalizes same-sex behaviour.

☆ Joy Gregory’s new book shines a light on overlooked Black women photographers

CNN —The genesis of photographer Joy Gregory’s latest project, “Shining Lights,” began 40 years ago, at a Valentine’s Day party in London. After the party and as they became friends, Mercer suggested the pair collaborate on a book about women’s photography. Courtesy the artist/MACKThe idea then, for a book surveying the work of Black women’s photography in Britain in the 1980s and 1990s, lay dormant for several decades. The result is “Shining Lights: Black Women Photographers in 1980s–90s Britain,” a new photography book edited by Gregory and co-published by Autograph and Mack. “I think as women, it wasn’t open, and I think being of color, it definitely wasn’t open.”In the book, Black “refers to the whole gamut of color, which was really about difference,” says Gregory.

☆ New exhibition shines a light on the forgotten Black voices of fashion

“The Missing Thread, Untold Stories of Black Fashion” is filled with photos like this, as the showcase dives deep into the history of Black British culture from the 1970s to the present day — specifically, how it has been a forgotten influence on the fashion industry. British Jamaican photographer Vanley Burke has spent over 50 years documenting Black British communities in Birmingham. London-born photographer Jennie Baptiste is another artist getting her dues in "The Missing Thread." At the center of the exhibition is the work of Black British designer Joe Casely-Hayford, who died in 2019. Casely-Hayford was nominated for Womenswear British Designer of the Year in 1989 and also Innovative Designer of the Year in 1991.

You read the ones at the top and you never get to the bottom ones. I recently reprised the Cookstrips for a few years in The Observer Food Monthly with my son Alex. Are there any classic novels that you only recently read for the first time? When I started writing in 1960 and wrote “The Ipcress File,” I stopped reading fiction to develop my own voice. So now I almost never read fiction.
